Vusumuzi Sibanda (26), of House Number 2664 Emganwini pleaded guilty to attempted murder before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mrs Judith Zuyu on Tuesday.
Half of his sentence was suspended for five years on condition that he is not within that period convicted of a similar offence.
Mr Jabulani Mhlanga, for the State, told the court that on 31 December last year, at about 8.30 pm, Derick Sodziwa of Nkulumane and his three friends were on their way to Sekusile Shopping Centre to buy fire crackers.
Near Nkulumane Clinic, they met Sibanda who told Sodziwa and his friends to walk on one side of the road.
Sodziwa did not hear what Sibanda said and Sibanda went on to grab him by the collar of his shirt and pushed him in the way of an oncoming motor vehicle.
Sodziwa was struck by the motor vehicle and sustained a fracture on his left leg.
