Five killed, five injured as car plunges into river

The provincial police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Sergeant Loveness Mangena, said the accident occurred on Monday at the 171km peg along the Masvingo-Mbalabala road.
“The driver, Admore Javangwe was driving a Toyota Ipsum and on approaching the 171km peg, he failed to negotiate a sharp bend, resulting in the car veering off the road and plunging into Dalani River,” she said.

Five people were killed on the spot.
Sgt Mangena could not release the names of the dead, saying they were yet to inform their next of kin. The bodies were taken to Filabusi District Hospital mortuary while the injured were also rushed to the same hospital.

The car was travelling from Masvingo and heading towards Bulawayo with 10 people on board.
“We suspect the driver was speeding, but we are still investigating. As police we continue to urge motorists to be extra cautious whenever driving on our roads.

“They should also first check their vehicles’ fitness before embarking on a journey to avoid such incidents, especially now that we are approaching the Easter holiday period,” said the police spokesperson.
