A 29-year-old man from Chipinge has been slapped with an effective six-year jail term after being convicted of attempted murder.
Vengai Sithole from Mbuyanehanda “B” Village, Chief Garahwa, Chipinge, was arraigned before the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court, facing an attempted murder charge after attacking his neighbour over a ZAR15 debt.
He was found guilty was sentenced to eight years in prison, with two years suspended for five years, resulting in an effective six-year term.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe revealed that on November 17, 2024, Sithole approached the 24-year-old victim at his homestead and demanded his 15 Rand that the victim owed him.
The victim, however, produced a 100 rand note, of which neither the offender nor the convicted had change.
Sithole is said to have left but returned at around 7 PM armed with a machete. He struck the victim once on the forehead, causing a deep cut.
This incident is one of a concerning and leading trends of violent attacks over debt disputes in Zimbabwe.
