AFRICA University recently donated goods worth thousands of dollars realised from their annual charity golf tournament to orphans at Houtberg Child Care Centre in Chipinge. The donated goods comprised of blankets, mattresses, cooking oil, clothing, footwear, a television set, a radio, maize-meal, rice and soap to mention but a few.
Since its inception in 1998, the AU Golf Tournament has become a helping hand to charitable homes dotted across the province.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, AU Vice-Chancellor and patron of the Golf Tournament, Professor Munashe Furusa, said the university through its Golf Charity
Tournament was committed to improve lives of the disadvantaged community through donations and scholarship programmes.
He said AU as a church-related institution they were passionate about the issue of orphanage because they know that there is talent in the kids.
“AU will continue to work hard to improve the lives of disadvantaged people in various communities.
“The AU Golf Tournament chose to support Houtberg Child Care Centre because of the great work they are doing for the Chipinge community,” he said.
Prof Furusa said the donation would go a long way in helping the orphanage to produce astute businesspeople and lawyers who will one day also help others like them.
“I want to challenge all children here to work hard and produce better results which will enable them to access scholarships to pursue studies at AU.
“We don’t just give donations, but we are a higher learning institute with goals of developing tomorrow`s visionary leaders.
“It is our hope that through this small donation we will be able to achieve greater goals,” said Prof Furusa.
Houtberg Home director, Mr Misheck Sigauke, said the donation came at a time when the centre was facing a plethora of challenges, chief among them lack of food and bed linen.
Mr Sigauke thanked AU for its continued support. “Without this donation, we don’t know how we were going to survive.
“Things have been tough for this centre, but we thank these committed men and women from the AU Charity Golf Tournament for coming to our rescue during our darkest hour,” he said. He said despite facing a myriad of challenges, the centre through the support of local community and developmental partners such as AU, it has managed to soldier on.
Chipinge East legislator and Deputy Minister of Information Technology Communication and Courier Service, Dr Winmore Mlambo, thanked AU Golf Charity Tournament for their kind gesture of giving back to the community.
“We appreciate the efforts taken by AU towards eradicating poverty in underprivileged societies, and this is a good gesture from ” he said.
