Banda, who appeared before regional magistrate Mr William Bhila, pleaded not guilty to fraudulently acquiring four generators, a motorbike, 15 knapsacks, a seed drill and five chains from the RBZ worth US$42 000 after masquerading as a retired senior assistant commissioner in the police. He would at times say he was a war veteran.
Mr Bhila for purposes of sentencing treated the 15 counts as one and sentenced him to four years. For impersonating a police officer Banda was slapped with a one-year prison term which will, however, run concurrently with the four years. In passing sentence Mr Bhila said Banda dished out implements to people who were not vetted adding that he also benefited.
The offence, he said, was premeditated as Banda was never charged to distribute any farm mechanisation equipment.
He added that he was aided by his claims of being a war veteran and a retired senior assistant commissioner.
