Unheralded Norton-based artiste Austin Stylez, real name Rodrick “Austin” Mahiya, has been making waves in the local music industry with his unique blend of Zim hip-hop and Afro-pop.
With an impressive discography of 22 officially released songs, Austin Stylez has established himself as a force to be reckoned with.
In an interview, with The Herald Arts, Austin Stylez shared his perspective on his musical journey and the impact he hopes to make through his music.
He expressed his unwavering determination to stay true to his artistic vision, despite facing criticism along the way.
He firmly believes that pushing boundaries and experimenting with different genres is the key to success.
“I am Austin Stylez, a creative genius who finds solace in the realm of music.”
“It is my duty to express my life’s journey, along with the experiences of those around me,” he said.
“Despite my reserved nature, music grants me the ability to communicate and forge connections.”
“My songwriting predominantly revolves around authentic accounts of real-life encounters that resonate with individuals from all walks of life.”
Austin Stylez said growing up in a family that values moral principles, he understood the significance of decency.
“I, therefore, feel a profound responsibility to share my knowledge and experiences to contribute to a better world,” he said.
Austin Stylez has been gaining recognition for his hit songs, including collaborations such as “Muchamuramba” featuring Villa Bount, “I Just Wanna Be Alright,” “Zvichaita Bho,” “Kuenda Newe,” “Nemoyo” featuring Alkastagho” and “Ndiwe” featuring Jah Solo (Solo Wema Lovers) and Alkastagho.”
Behind Austin Stylez’s success is his collaboration with his ‘brother’ in the music industry, Walter Maponga, also known as Projusa Watta.
Together, they have created a powerful partnership, with Austin focusing on the visual aspects of their projects, including scriptwriting, directing, shooting, and editing, while Watta handles the production, mixing, and mastering.
Looking ahead, Austin Stylez is eager to collaborate with more artistes who share his passion for creating meaningful and inspiring music.
“I hope to work with more artistes who have the vision to inspire and use music to connect.”
