THE official opening of the Fourth Session of the Seventh Parliament was yesterday marred by violence as Zanu-PF and MDC-T supporters clashed.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau, yesterday confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that some youths attacked each other during the ceremony.”
Insp Sabau, however, said no reports were made and police did not arrest anyone linked to the skirmishes.
However, President Mugabe in his speech castigated violence urging Zimbabweans “to exert our energy in fostering unity, peace, development and equality of opportunity for all our people”.
“Rather than amplify our differences, let us find strength in diversity, guided by the firm conviction that we are the sole guardians of our independence and sovereignty.”
Legislative agenda set

PRESIDENT Mugabe yesterday officially opened the Fourth Session of the Seventh Parliament and assured investors that their businesses are safe in Zimbabwe.
He said Government expected full co-operation by all relevant corporate stakeholders to achieve win-win outcomes.
“I wish to assure investors that their investments in the country remain safe and to urge them to maintain compliance with the country’s laws,” he said.
On housing, the President said Government had embarked on joint venture projects with local authorities and private developers in major cities and growth points for housing provision. A 20 percent quota will be for civil servants.
The President said while Government was working on short-term measures to resume flights at Air Zimbabwe, the State was in the process of courting a strategic partner for the airline.
Normal 2011/12 rainfall season forecast

ZIMBABWE expects normal rainfall during the 2011/12 summer cropping season with weather experts urging farmers to plan carefully.
The first half of the season which covers October, November and December is expected to have normal rains with a bias towards below normal rains.
The 2010/11 season was predicted to be normal to above normal throughout the season.
Presenting the seasonal rainfall forecast for the forthcoming cropping season in Harare yesterday, Meteorological Services Department senior forecaster Mr Jephias Mugumbate said regions 1 and 2 were expecting normal rains with a bias towards below normal rainfall.
Region 1 comprises Mashonaland provinces, Harare, North Eastern parts of Manicaland Province and Matabeleland North Province.
“Region 2 and 3 comprised of Matabeleland South, Masvingo the bulk of the Midlands and extreme southern parts of Matabeleland South provinces are expected to receive below normal to normal rainfall during the first half of the rainfall season,” he said.
