ACCLAIMED Zimbabwean writer and actor Philani Amadéus Nyoni, is opening literary doors for aspiring authors by offering free editing and consultations for short stories, with a deliberate focus on writers from Matabeleland and other provinces outside Harare and Bulawayo.
Backed by his creative consultancy, Elane Arts, Nyoni will dedicate three full days to editing up to five short stories. He will provide not only editorial feedback but also one-on-one consultations to help writers refine their craft and better position their work for both local and international literary markets.
“I’ve been blessed with so much support throughout my career — from writers, editors, dramaturges and publishers across the globe. I was raised to be grateful, so I want to honour that by paying it forward. Writers in Bulawayo and Harare already have some access to phenomenal practitioners. I want to give those on the margins a real shot at creating something extraordinary,” said Nyoni.
Nyoni, a globally recognised and widely published author, emphasised that great writing does not happen in isolation and that success begins with mastering the fundamentals.
“Writing is rewriting. It’s the small things that elevate a good piece of writing into a great one. Editing your own work is incredibly difficult, so I want to help writers shape their stories into something fierce and phenomenal. The world is competitive, but our stories deserve a place in it.”
His editorial approach goes far beyond grammar. Nyoni focuses on narrative structure, tone, diction and voice — the very DNA of compelling storytelling.
“I’m not just polishing sentences. I’m helping build engines. We strip it down, fix the bolts and nuts and then add nuance and flair — that kind of fun, essential work that gives stories staying power.”
The initiative is being spearheaded by Elane Arts, a company Nyoni co-founded with Busani Ncube to support writers, artists, organisations and independent publishers in realising their publishing and creative ambitions.
“Elane Arts exists to nurture vision, whether literary or artistic, and this offering is one way of giving back,” he said.
The selection process for this editorial opportunity is simple: first come, first served. Nyoni will edit no more than five short stories, allowing for meaningful engagement with each submission.
“I want to keep an open mind. I’m not selecting based on themes or genres — I want to see what stories come in and where we can take them.”
Although the initiative focuses on short prose, Nyoni envisions a broader future.
“It’s just three days for now, but if we can find support — maybe a sponsor or partner — we could build it into something much greater. For now, I’m donating my skills and experience, and hopefully we’ll inspire something lasting.”
Nyoni brings a formidable track record to the table. A former Chief Editor at Ubuntu Afro Publishers, a language coach at the Centre for Talent Development (CTD), and a published poet and performer, he understands the literary world from the inside out.
He aims to share both editorial expertise and industry insight — from polishing a manuscript to navigating the publishing process, identifying suitable literary journals, or entering international competitions.
“I want to help find homes for these stories — whether in journals, magazines, or contests. Genres like Afrofuturism and speculative fiction are gaining global traction. I want our writers to be part of that movement.”
Nyoni’s initiative comes at a time when Zimbabwean voices are increasingly resonating on the global literary stage, and the appetite for authentic African narratives has never been stronger. For many aspiring authors in under-served regions, this is a rare and timely opportunity to learn from one of the country’s most daring and accomplished literary figures.
“If even one writer finds their voice or builds confidence through this process, that’s a win. And maybe they’ll dream bigger and inspire someone else.”
