A WOODVILLE man brutally assaulted his brother-in-law using the back of an axe in a shocking attack that left the victim nursing painful injuries.
George Nyawo (31) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube, who fined him US$200 for the vicious assault.
Prosecutor Mehluli Ndlovu told the court that the incident occurred on 29 July 2025, at the home of the complainant, Arthur Dube.
On the day in question, Dube was about to leave his house to visit a friend when Nyawo, accompanied by an unidentified accomplice, stormed in.
Without warning, Nyawo allegedly grabbed Dube by the collar and struck him with the back of an axe, landing a heavy blow on his left cheek.
Nyawo is said to have rained more blows on Dube, hitting him on the back of both legs as the accomplice joined in, turning the scuffle into a full-on beating.
“The complainant tried to fight back, but the accused overpowered him,” said Ndlovu.
Fearing for his life, Dube managed to break free and ran from the scene before the attack escalated further.
He later reported the matter to the police, who arrested Nyawo. The other attacker remains on the run.
The court’s decision to fine Nyawo instead of jailing him has sparked mixed reactions, with some arguing that such violent outbursts deserve harsher punishment to deter future incidents.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for Nyawo’s accomplice as tensions in the family remain high.
