Villagers in Maphisa, Matabeleland South Province, were left shell-shocked after a man brutally axed his younger brother to death, blaming him for wrecking his marriage.
Police confirmed that 36-year-old Xolani Dube from Rathanyana Village, Matobo, has been arrested for the grisly murder of his brother, 20-year-old Gift Dube.
According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the chilling incident happened on 12 June 2025. It is alleged that Dube lost his temper during an explosive confrontation and accused Gift of meddling in his marriage and causing his wife to leave him.
In a fit of rage, Xolani reportedly grabbed an axe and struck Gift several times on the head, killing him on the spot.
After committing the horror act, Xolani calmly walked into Maphisa Police Station and handed himself over.
“Yes, we can confirm the arrest of Xolani Dube in connection with a murder case. The suspect allegedly struck his brother several times on the head with an axe over allegations that he caused his divorce,” said Comm Nyathi.
Sources close to the family said tensions had been simmering for weeks, with Xolani accusing Gift of spreading lies and turning his wife against him.
The community has been traumatised by the fratricide, with some calling for traditional cleansing ceremonies to rid the area of the “dark cloud” brought by the bloodshed.
Xolani is expected to appear in court soon to face murder charges.
