Zimbabweans are known for their hospitality and values that advocate caring for your neighbour and loving them like family. A�
People come from many foreign cultures into this country and are genuinely touched by the show of affection and rich cultures that value community, togetherness and the importance of unity.
This is what we are but we must caution against latching onto individualism that fills the marketplace of ideas where we are now even failing to share simple things like phones.
The country was recently hit by floods that have been declared a state of disaster.
We commend the Government for the declaration that will allow for the various partners to mobilise resources and attend to the disaster with speed.
While the Government and other partners mobilise funds to assist affected communities, we are calling on Zimbabweans all over the country, indeed all over the world, to think of their neighbours, their friends, their parents and all those genuinely in need after losing all they ever owned to the floods.
We believe no help can be considered too small.
This is an appeal to all Zimbabweans to demonstrate those values that have earned us the respect of many nations by assisting during these difficult times.
We have communities in Tsholotsho and other areas that were hit hard and lost their homes, clothes, food and had in some instances whole fields with promising crops washed away.A� These people are now housed in a camp at a hospital.
This shows the level of desperation of these people, who before the storm were managing on their own.
It is against this background that we appeal for help to get stuff such as soap, clothes, stationery, food and even counselling help for the victims of the disaster.
Help has been pouring in from various quarters but more is still needed.
It is our belief that as Zimbabweans we can ride this storm and help our brothers and sisters rebuild their lives.
While the Government identifies alternative land to settle the affected, we should in our own small way individually make the victims comfortable in their temporary accommodation and give them hope as they prepare to move to a permanent and hopefully safer home.A� Together we can be the best donors for the affected communities.
Let us not look elsewhere first for help but rise to the occasion by offering any help that we can offer.A� Zimbabwe Newspapers in Bulawayo, at the Chronicle building, is one collection centre for help for the Tsholotsho flood victims and we thank those that have already sent in their donations and we shall keep in touch with the Civil Protection Unit so that we are aware of the areas where help is needed most.
