A 20-year-old man from Fort Rixon in Insiza District has appeared in court for allegedly raping and robbing an 84 year old woman of USD$1 200.

Ndumiso Nyathi of Pioneer Village 1 appeared before Tredgold regional magistrate Mr Mark Dzira facing rape and robbery charges.

He pleaded not guilty to both counts and was remanded in custody to 17 August for continuation of trial.

Prosecuting, Ms Rumbidzai Gwishiri told the court that on July 29 at around 11am, Nyathi met the complainant, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, in a bush area where she was looking for cattle.

The two are not related but live in the same village.

“He hit the complainant once on the back of her neck using an unknown object, and she fell down facing upwards,” she said.

Nyathi got on top of the complainant and rolled her face downwards. He pulled up the complainant’s dress and covered her face with it.

He went on to have sexual intercourse without her consent once.

It is further alleged that while on top, Nyathi heard that the complainant had a wallet around her neck.

He then took the complainant’s wallet which had cash amounting to US$1 200.

The court heard that Nyathi then got off the complainant and left.

The complainant narrated the case to her neighbour who then alerted other neighbours and they managed to apprehend Nyathi at his place of residence.

The matter was reported to the police and the complainant was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for medical examination.
