SOCIAL vices continue to escalate with lines between what is acceptable on one hand and reprehensible on the other being blurred rapidly as morality recedes. New terms are being fashioned to sanitise what only a few years ago would have made many shake their heads in disbelief.
In our last edition we carried an article on the dangerous practice of abortion and how easy it was to conduct one, amid reports that there were many runners selling medications on the streets. This is a worrying development since so many youngsters without proper guidance are being led astray with wild party lifestyles only to find themselves in a difficult situation after falling pregnant.
It is such unplanned pregnancies that provide a market for illegal abortion practitioners. This shows the country still has a long way in tackling this issue through reproductive health education and awareness.
It would appear there is a generation that is either unaware or just does not care about sexually transmitted infections, let alone unwanted pregnancy.
It is shocking that our young people are resorting to backyard abortions time and again over something that could easily be prevented through abstention, being faithful to one partner and using protection for those that insist on indulging.
Our call to our young people is that they should desist from such practices and avoid casual sex that leads to their desperation after they fall pregnant.
Many young women have lost their lives through these illegal abortions and many more have been scarred for life, never to give birth again due to complications arising from the unsafe abortions.
Apart from the fact that abortion is illegal in the country, it is also a dangerous option for those that let drugs and passion get the better of them, only to be confronted by the results of their actions through pregnancy.
It is also down to families and society at large to instil the right values in our youth so that they do not over time normalise what is very abnormal.
There are so many infections and psychological repercussions associated with abortion and if only survivors could get a platform to share their torment with the youth as a way of dissuading them from taking a similar route.
It may be more effective for the youth to hear first-hand from those that suffered the pain of abortion, emotional trauma and in some cases their prison stints.
Reproductive health is quite key and households need to open up on sex education so that we save our children from abuse at the hands of their boyfriends and later abortion pill traders who are only interested in making money instead of worrying about the lives of the young, naA?ve and desperate customers. Abortion is a crime, a sin and an emotional sentence on the perpetrator. . .
