COMMENT: Xmas as seen by a child

As kids Christmas started the day parents took us to town to shop for new clothes.

The feeling we got when we fitted the clothes just sparked the Christmas spirit in us.

Christmas clothes were bought a month or a few weeks before the big day and then safely storedA in our mothersa or grandmothersa bedrooms.

Every chance we got we would sneak into the bedroom to wear the clothes before Christmas day and sometimes invite friends to peep through windows so they could see our new clothes.

Opening cupboards just to have a look at the goodies and imagining their taste made our day.

Parents set expectations for the season, so do their kids because a full course meal is just what Santa ordered.

Waking up in the morning for a light breakfast was normal because lunch would be heavy.

One could see children hovering around the kitchen in their morning clothes patiently waiting to bath and invade the living room for lunch.

The adults had their own game going down. The men would gather at a chosen neighbouras yard with the radio taken out for the whole neighbourhood to listen to music.

In most cases the December song in this part of the country (Bulawayo) would be a kwaito or mbaqanga track, although today it could be a Jah Prayzah or Winky D song since these two artistes have a cross over appeal amongst all age groups.

With the spirit in the air, parents hardly said NO to our demands on Christmas a you had to wait twelve months to daringly ask for an impossible thing from oneas parent.

Finding time or making time to spend with your kids on Christmas Day can be hard, but it is so, so worth it. You will realise that it will create a connection between parents and their children.
