The Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs) have been postponed, leaving the city’s cultural and creative industries (CCIs) grappling with uncertainty and raising questions about the sustainability of the event.
Since its inception in 2017, the BAAs have been instrumental in celebrating and promoting Bulawayo’s artistic talent.
However, the withdrawal of Roil, the awards’ principal sponsor, in 2023 marked a turning point, creating financial and operational challenges for the awards’ organisers.
In a statement, the Bulawayo Arts Awards Trust attributed the postponement of the eighth edition to “limited representation across certain genres.”
However, the lack of specificity, about which genres were under-represented left many in the arts community seeking further explanation.

“The decision was not made lightly, as we carefully considered various factors that contribute to the awards’ stature and success,” read the Trust’s statement.
The postponement shifts the next edition of the BAAs to August 2025, aligning with the annual Heroes Holiday under the sub-theme “Celebrating Our Heroes”.
Amid the disappointment, organisers revealed plans to inject fresh energy into the event by introducing new faces and ideas.
The Trust also aims to expand the adjudication process to encompass a broader pool of artistic achievements while exploring partnerships and sponsorships to ensure a grander celebration.
While the Trust views this delay as an opportunity for revitalisation, many artistes are left questioning how it will affect their visibility and ongoing projects.
The postponement underscores the persistent challenges faced by Bulawayo’s CCIs, particularly in securing consistent financial backing. The arts community now awaits August 2025, hoping that the revamped BAAs will reignite the vibrancy and recognition the local creative sector deserves.
