PUMULA residents in Bulawayo are living in fear of baboons that have invaded their suburb and are raiding their homes to steal food.
According to the latest council minutes, Ward 17 Councillor Sikhululekile Moyo said baboons had always been in the area but had recently become more aggressive, forcing vendors to stop operating due to the animals invading households.
Cllr Moyo said officials from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), and council rangers had been engaged to address the problem but to no avail.

“Councillor Sikhululekile Moyo raised concern over baboons that had invaded some parts of Pumula. The Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Rangers and National Parks had been engaged to address the problem but to no avail. Vendors in the area were failing to operate because of the baboons which were invading households,” the minutes read in part.
The baboons’ increasingly aggressive behaviour, characterized by their raids on homes, was reportedly driven by hunger and a diminishing food supply in their natural habitat.
