RAY Badenhorst was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week after securing second place in a loaded field at the South-eastern Collegiate. The Florida State-based Zimbabwean was competing against four top-10 programmes and fired a five-under-par 211 over the course of the three-day event to guide the Panthers to a collective fifth place finish.
In doing so, the player with the NCAA Division II 17th-best scoring average, did not shoot a single round over par.
Badenhorst’s effort was tied for tops among SSC participants, as he completed play with the fifth most birdies and number one scoring average on the par fours — 3.83.
In yet other outstanding performance, a Scott Vincent inspired Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of three-under-par 861 and ran away with the team title at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Sunday afternoon.
The event, hosted by George Mason, was played on the par 72, 7,001-yard El Campeón Course at the historic Mission Inn Resort and Spa.
The Hokies, who won last season’s tournament by five strokes, shot a three-over 291 in the Saturday morning opening round and followed that with a two-under 286 in the afternoon.
On Sunday, the Hokies once again had the low round of the day, a four-under-284, to close out the victory.
Vincent shot a four-under 212 and finished in second place, two strokes behind medalist Austin Powell of Penn.
Vincent’s collegue, Travor Cone, finished in third place, two strokes behind the Zimbabwean.
The Hokies defeated runner-up East Carolina by 22 strokes and third place North Carolina State by 27 strokes.
Tech returns to the course in two weeks, as they travel to Greenville, South Carolina to compete in the Furman Invitational.
The tournament, to be contested March 27-29, will be played on the Furman University Golf Course.
