A SECTION of Bulawayo councillors has called for the introduction of a by-law that bans the use of diapers, claiming they were a major contributor to littering.
The councillors further claimed that women were not practicing proper diaper disposal mechanisms. Speaking during a full council meeting held at the council chambers on Wednesday, Ward One Councillor, Mlandu Ncube, said there was a need for councillors to relook the issue of littering in the city and not the impact diapers were having in increasing the litter in the city.
Clr Ncube was making his contribution, while deliberating on the health, housing and education committee minutes, focusing on cleansing services in the city.
“With the way these diapers — which are used by women in caring for their children — are now littering our city it is becoming worrying. I propose that we become the first city to introduce a by-law that will ban the use of diapers.
“It is in itself surprising that women of nowadays are disgusted by their own children so much that they no longer want to use our traditional nappies but want to use the diapers, which they cannot even dispose of,” said Clr Ncube.
The councillor said the banning of diapers would see the revival of the nappy making industries in the city thereby having a ripple effect on economic revival in both the city and country.
However, he immediately got sharp objections from female councillors with the health, housing and education committee chairperson, Clr Sikhululekile Moyo rebuking the two councillors for gender insensitivity.
Other male councillors also criticised Clr Ncube, with Ward Three Councillor, Silas Chigora noting that his sentiments were backward and contentious.
