HIGHLANDERS sponsors BancABC yesterday held a soccer coaching clinic for Msitheli High and Pumula High girls’ teams conducted by Highlanders coach Bongani Mafu at Barbourfields Stadium.
The coaching clinic was part of BancABC’s way of giving back to the community.
The bank’s account relationship manager Unami Sibanda said the initiative was targeted at schools that had accounts with the bank.
“We as a bank want to ensure that the girl child is supported, not only through education, but also in sports, and that’s why we’re holding this coaching clinic. We want the girl child to know that she can reach greater heights through playing football. These two schools are among our top depositors so it’s fair to give back to them,” said Sibanda.
BancABC also donated a set of football kit to the two schools for use today where they will feature as curtain raisers of the epic encounter between old foes Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium.
Mafu applauded BancABC for supporting the girl child, whom he feels needs attention when it comes to sport, especially football. “Being part of this initiative was an honour. I’m proud of the Highlanders players for the way they helped and interacted with the girls,” Mafu said.
He said he was saddened by the Mighty Warriors’ failure to travel to Cote d’Ivoire last week.
“I appeal to the corporate world to support our women in sports. They can’t do it on their own without sponsorship,” he said.
