A fundraising sporting gala has been organised for tomorrow by the Bango Development Association in a string of activities lined up which will see proceeds going towards the construction of a secondary school and bridges.
The Mangwe district based community believes sport is a good media for social cohesion and community development. Through sport they believe they will be able to reach out to a wider section of the community and sell their idea of constructing a secondary school for pupils who in the past have had to travel up to 10km to the nearest school.
Donatus Dube the chairman of the development association said: “The football fiesta is part of a fundraising project to raise funds to build a secondary school for the Bango community in Mangwe.
“We have a primary school which was constructed in 1940 now we need a secondary school.”
The football festival will see Joshua Mqabuko High School (St Joseph’s) in action with Dombodema, Sigangatsha and Bango Swallows.
Girls have also been catered for on the programme in which the community and pupils will pay a nominal fee.
Joshua Mqabuko and Bango Swallows have a decades old rivalry and villagers from across Semukwe (St Joseph Area) are expected to travel to watch their sons and daughters in action. Dombodema were invited on the strength of treasurer Faris Mcupi Ndebele having been a former pupil at the school.
“We decided to start our fundraising campaign for building the school with a soccer tournament because there is nothing that brings together people more than the beautiful game of football,” said Ndebele.
He says the association has a membership of about 200 each of whom paid $20 and subscribe $5 every month.
