TONDERAI Kamuzu, a rabbit farming expert has called on Zimbabweans to venture into the lucrative business in which a kilogramme of the meat sales up to US$8.

He made this call at a workshop meant to equip farmers with the know how to rear the rabbits which was held at Mrs Contilda Dube’s Benville Farm in Umzingwane District.

“We want to train our farmers so that they can realise profits. There is a lot in rabbit farming, there is rabbit meat and rabbit manure which benefits other projects like horticulture. Rabbit urine can be used as a pesticide because it’s environmentally friendly,” said Kamuzu.

He said there is a huge demand for rabbit meat in the country.
Rabbit meat is said to be lean, white meat that is digestible protein and is low in fat.

Its taste is close to chicken.

“The rabbit market is untapped in Zimbabwe. We have a huge market. Zimbabwe has the biggest abattoir in the SADC region which is Raymeg Rabbit Abattoir. The market is there but there are a few rabbit farmers.

That is why we are holding the workshop so that we impart knowledge on rabbit farming so that we have more farmers participating in rabbit farming,” he said.
