MANDLA Mpofu has quit as Bantu Rovers’ head coach two weeks before the start of the Zifa Southern Region Division One league.
Both parties yesterday said the separation was mutual, with Bantu Rovers wishing the Young Warriors’ assistant coach the best.
“We couldn’t agree on certain things and that happens in football. I will continue supporting Bantu Rovers and I will let you know my next destination in due course,” said Mpofu.
Bantu Rovers’ general-manager Wilbert Sibanda said Mpofu’s resignation had nothing to do with the coach’s five-day absence from training a fortnight ago.
“At Bantu Rovers we don’t believe in speculation and we know people are bound to say a lot of things when the coach is not at training.
The truth is that we sat down with our coach and decided to mutually part ways. He is one of the best coaches in the country and deserves to be in the PSL. Unfortunately, because of our strategy to focus on juniors it was felt that we can’t hold him down for two years because he has bigger ambitions,” said Sibanda.
Former Highlanders and national team midfielder Johannes Ngodzo, who was Mpofu’s assistant, has been elevated to head coach.
Sibanda said Mpofu assembled a competitive side, which they believe will effectively compete for the Division One title.
