A SIMPLE “hello” sparked a bloodbath at a Bulawayo bar when six enraged men allegedly launched a vicious machete and bottle attack on a fellow patron for greeting a woman in their crew!
Brian Ncube (24), Busiswa Mpofu (24), Mthulisi Phakathi (24), Nqobezweni Nyathi (22), Phikelela Kabu (25), and Calvin Ndlovu (20) are now behind bars facing attempted murder charges after the violent early morning ambush at Nyahugwe Sports Bar on 10 May.
According to prosecutor Christina Manyika, at around 2AM, Vincent Murove greeted a woman enjoying drinks with the gang.
That innocent act didn’t sit well with the testosterone-charged crew.
“Mpofu and Ncube confronted the complainant and smashed a beer bottle on his head,” said Ms Manyika. “Mpofu then pulled out a machete and hacked Mr Murove on the hand, causing serious injuries.”
The attack turned into a full-blown gang assault, with the rest of the accused stomping, kicking, and bottling the bleeding man as he lay defenceless on the floor. The court heard the six acted with a common purpose to kill.
The gang vanished into the night, but detectives later recovered the bloodied machete at a house in Mpopoma, where four of the suspects were found snoring after the savage beatdown.
Mr Murove was rushed to hospital and has since been discharged, lucky to be alive.
The six appeared before Western Commonage Regional Magistrate Sibongile Marondedze on Thursday and were remanded in custody to 19 May pending a formal bail hearing.
From a greeting to a gory ambush, in Bulawayo, it seems even manners can get you maimed.
