THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has urged Zimbabweans to stay hydrated, limit exposure to direct sunlight and avoid outdoor fires as temperatures continue to soar, with some areas recording highs of 44 degrees Celsius.
In its latest weather report, the MSD said Kariba recorded 44°C on Wednesday, while Binga reached 42°C. Lupane and Tsholotsho both recorded maximum temperatures of 40°C.
The department warned that the hot conditions were expected to persist today (Thursday), with clear skies and mild conditions in the morning giving way to mostly sunny and hot weather in the afternoon.
“Keep hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water,” the MSD advised, urging people to limit exposure to direct sunlight by wearing sunhats and staying under umbrellas or in shaded areas.
The department also warned against starting outdoor fires, saying windy conditions could cause them to spread quickly.
The latest forecast comes as the country experiences a spell of hot weather, with residents urged to take precautions against excessive heat.
The MSD said Friday’s weather outlook points to a possible change in conditions in some parts of the country, including Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and Matabeleland North and South provinces.
These areas are expected to experience brief cloudy periods, windy and warm conditions, with isolated thunderstorms possible.
Harare Metropolitan Province, the northern parts of Manicaland and all Mashonaland provinces are expected to remain mostly clear and hot in the afternoon, although brief cloudy periods may occur.
The department advised people to carry raincoats where possible and remain indoors when thunderstorms occur. It also cautioned against seeking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
Residents have also been urged to remain alert to changing weather conditions and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves from extreme heat and possible thunderstorms.
