THE Zimbabwe Under 16 basketball team is in camp at Girls’ High School in Harare in preparation of the Afro Basket qualifiers that will be held in Botswana from May 25 to June 2. Technical president of the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu said the team will be in camp till April 24 and will use the time to work on their game plan.
“Today is the first day of camp and the players are coming in from all over the country. The coaches are going to be working on player combinations. In order for the team to play well together they need to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Ndlovu said.
He said they will be facing stiff competition in Botswana and as such they need to conduct thorough preparations.
He said they have seasoned coaches for the team.
“It’ll not be easy in the qualifiers so we will be employing different techniques in our training. Our coaches are experienced enough to get the best out of the players. There’ll be several other training camps that’ll be held in the coming month building up to the qualifiers,” he said.
The girls’ team is made up of Getrude Mapiye, Hapiness Maroto, Kimberley Marembe, Ruvimbo Mudyanadzo and Sharon Ndlovu (all from Girls’ High School), Samantha Chirongo (Jameson High School), Tanai Madzikanda (Dominican Convent, Harare), Rutendo Mugodzeri, Rumbidzai Gumunyu (Goromonzi High School), Samantha Ruwuya (Arundel High School), Blessing Machazire (St James High School), Thandeka Ngwenya, Nomqhele Mahlangu (Dominican Convent, Bulawayo), Victoria Makamure (Sanyati High School).
The boys’ team is yet to be finalised as some of the boys have not checked into camp.
The head coach for both teams is Tapuwa Mungunyana, assisted by Clement Kufekete with Thelma Kuzorounyanye as the manager.
