Walter Nyamukondiwa-Mashonaland West Bureau Chief
NATIONAL hero and former CIO director Cde Walter Basopo, whose Chimurenga name was Gary Dzasukwa, has been described as a patriotic and dedicated cadre who committed more than 40 years to the service and protection of the country.
Government officials, relatives, friends, war veterans and Zanu PF representatives from Mashonaland West Province gave heartfelt eulogies of the war veteran who operated in the province for the greater part of his career.
His brother, Mr Brain Miriri, said Cde Basopo was a unifier who would help family members.
“As a family, we have lost a strong pillar who was reliable and prepared to help everyone,” said Mr Miriri.
Provincial intelligence officer, Mr Godwin Mungate, said Cde Basopo excelled in fighting for the country and upholding its security after independence.
“He was a results-oriented man who was dedicated to the execution of his duties. He also taught us that our job is to protect the country. When it came to the protection of the country, he was uncompromising and expected nothing less from us,” said Mr Mungate.
Zanu PF provincial chairman for Mashonaland West Cde Mary Mliswa-Chikoka said Cde Basopo gave so much to the province and the country at large.
Cde Basopo’s body will lie in state at his Riverside home before being airlifted to Harare in preparation for burial tomorrow.
