BAT certified Top Employer Africa 2014

CIGARETTE manufacturer, British American Tobacco southern African subsidiaries have been certified as the Top Employer Africa 2014 for the second year running. The findings were based on independent research by the Top Employers Institute who look at organisations that offer their employees outstanding working conditions while exceptionally catering for their welfare.

Top Employers Institute presented the award in Johannesburg, South Africa last week for BAT’s subsidiaries covering Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Regional director for the Top Employers Institute in Africa and Beneleux, Ms Samantha Crous said their research had proven that among the companies assessed, BAT fully met the criteria of an enabling working environment including benefits offered to employees, training and development and career development among others.

“Our comprehensive research concluded that British American Tobacco provides an outstanding employment environment and nurtures and develops talent throughout all levels of the organisation.

“The international recognition as a Top Employer Institute in Africa sends a strong message to their staff and all stakeholders that this company greatly values their people and that their employee conditions are at the highest standard,” she said.

BAT Southern African markets general manager, Mr Andre Joubert added that he was delighted by the certification which he hailed as confirmation that his organisation was indeed dedicated to ensuring they provided a conducive environment for excellence towards their employees.

“We are extremely proud to be part of this exclusive group of great employees and as part of BAT’s ethos to build a legacy of leaders across the globe, we encourage initiative and foster an environment that allows our staff to showcase their creativity, innovation, leadership, decision making and team working skills.

“This principle continues to work well for our business across southern Africa, because it allows all employees to take ownership of, and pride in delivering the company’s results,” he added.

BAT southern African markets, head of human resources, Ms Nyasha Mutsai also said their focus is not so much on just developing policies, but rather ensuring that the policies deliver value for employees through a conducive culture.

British American Tobacco Angola, British American Tobacco Mozambique, British American Tobacco Zambia and British American Tobacco Holdings (Limited) Zimbabwe are part of the British American Tobacco Group, the world’s most international tobacco group with a presence in 180 countries across the globe.

BAT employs over 400 people across Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe and this forms part of its southern African markets.
