KADOMA’S Battlefields area was turned into a crime scene horror show after a man allegedly went on a violent rampage, killing an elderly man and raping his wife in a sickening attack.
Isaac Chanuka (38) was arrested on 17 July following a manhunt sparked by the gruesome death of 83-year-old Funny Sakona, who was struck twice on the head with a log as he bravely tried to save his wife from the suspect’s assault.
Police, in a statement on X, say after killing Sakona on the spot, he allegedly raped the elderly man’s wife and fled the scene.
The community, rocked by the brutality of the crime, joined hands with police in tracking down the fugitive. Chanuka was eventually apprehended with help from residents who refused to let the monster roam free.
Police investigations revealed that just a day earlier, on 16 July, the suspect had also attacked another woman in the same area. He allegedly struck her on the head with a log and attempted to rape her before fleeing.
ZRP confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing. The suspect faces multiple charges including murder, rape, and assault.
Residents in Battlefields are still shaken, with many hailing Funny Sakona as a fallen hero who died trying to protect his wife.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals, as they continue to crack down on gender-based violence and violent crime across the country.
