JOHANNESBURG. – Head coach Arthur Zwane has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs are still searching for a striker to bolster their attacking department.
Chiefs are set to begin the 2022/23 season short of attacking options after parting ways with Leonardo Castro, Bernard Parker and Samir Nurkovic at the end of last season.
Khama Billiat stayed and will be expected to provide a good number of the goals.
The Amakhosi have so far added versatile attacker Ashely Du Preez from Stellenbosch to reinforce their attack.
“It’s key for us to get a number nine, but unfortunately it’s difficult at the moment to get the type of striker we are looking for.
“Those we have identified are not on the market, with their teams unwilling to sell,” Zwane said.
“We have been attending pre-season tournaments, and have been watching the CHAN Tournament), while watching all the games that took place in KZN.
“We also have been watching the qualifying games, the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. So it’s difficult, those who we are interested in like Musa Kamara we are still finding it difficult to bring him over.”
Zwane also revealed his team’s plan to sign a left-footed centre-back to bolster their defence.
“Left-back is also the other position that we need to beef up because we only have Dube, should anything happen to Dube we won’t have balance at the back.
“While I think we have many right-footed centre-backs.
“So we will keep looking until we find one and if we find one we will definitely bring him on board”, added Zwane.
Veteran forward Bernard Parker is training with SuperSport United following the end of his 11-year stay at Chiefs.
Parker’s contract with Amakhosi was not renewed at the end of June with the club opting against the high earners at the club despite the contributions made last season.
Just last season, Parker played 26 games and scored five goals but that was not enough to convince the club to retain him.
At SuperSport, Parker has linked up with Gavin Hunt again with the two having worked together at Chiefs.
Another player released by Chiefs, Lebogang Manyama has begun the process of completing a return to his former employers.
Manyama was among the dozen players discarded by Chiefs in June after a four-year spell at Naturena.
Chiefs had an option to extend his contract for a further season but decided against exercising that option.
Manyama had joined after a season-long stay in Turkey with Konyaspor. – KickOff
