Of course, it is a game, but the sad part is that the winner takes all while the losers take the walk of shame. A few lucky ones will clinch one or two deals as consolation for being on the show.
But starring on Big Brother Africa is just a thrill and after the thrill has gone reality sets in and it’s back to sing-sing.
Unfortunately for the majority of Zimbabwean housemates, this has been the case although there were few exceptions. Saturday Lifestyle looked at some of the moments of weaknesses by our Zimbabwean representatives that affected their lifestyle outside the house.
To date, Zimbabwe has had 10 representatives taking part in the show, namely Tapuwa Mhere, Bertha Zakeyo, Munyaradzi Chidzonga, Itai Makumbe, Kristal Culverwell, Vimbai Mutinhiri, Maneta and Teclar Mazanhi, Wendall Parson and Roki. As for Makosi Musambasi it was a roller-coaster! Tapuwa Mhere, who was the first to represent the country in the reality show, shook the continent when she appeared topless during a game of truth or dare, with the act sparking controversy back home.
Munyaradzi Chidzonga, aka the “Diamond Boy”, went into the house to promote his movie “Lobola” but somewhere along the line things fell apart after his bed romping with Motswana Tawana and when he stormed from the bathroom in the nude.
That cost him a chance to win the prize money and up to now if you want to know how bad those stunts were just ask his wife Adiona Maboreke.
Bertha Zakeyo’s tendencies of throwing herself at men while in the house did not win her the hearts of Zimbabwean after her departure from the house. She started well in the show but midway the cookie crumbled.
Kristal Culverwell, who was a technician prior to entering the reality show, went into the Big Brother house at the same time as Itai Makumbe, a university student.
While the two maintained their dignity in the house; oddly enough, they were not the best of friends. They would stab each other instead of working together. That became their demise. Interestingly, they were both known for gossip.
Vimbai Mutinhiri was perhaps one of the luckiest former housemates to earn something out of her participation in Big Brother. Despite her patriotism and exposure, she however, was beside herself when she openly made advances to Wendall Parson. Currently, Vimbai is doing well after she landed a job as a presenter for AfricaMagic show called Star Gist.
She also co-hosted the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards held in Lagos recently. Rockford “Roki” Josphats and Maneta Mazanhi will forever rue the day they fought in the house. They were subsequently disqualified putting a dent on Zimbabwe. Since that fight the two lost out big time and till now nothing meaningful in terms of contracts has come their way. Besides the fight, Maneta misrepresented an entire nation and forgot that reality would soon dawn in.
Maneta’s sister also did not fare well while she was in the house. She was a joke after she assumed the role of a princess of an imaginary “kingdom of Zamunda” where beer binges were the order of the day. She later confessed after her exit from the house that she acted for the cameras. Oh please!
One of the best housemates was to emerge from Zimbabwe was Wendall Parson who remained true to himself. Not only did he show his allegiance to Zimbabwe but also his love for Africa.
Recently, M-Net Africa who screens the show announced that Big Brother had hit one million Facebook likes. Biola Alabi, the managing director of M-Net Africa, said: “It clearly demonstrates the growing reality of pan-Africanism, the increasing sense that Africans are stronger together than separately. It’s a remarkable achievement for a show like Big
Brother Africa and one that is only possible because a million people made it so.”
Given such numbers it is easy to see why Big Brother is just a thrill; it is the people who make the show not the housemates. The moment you leave the show you become a nobody.
