Be clear about what you want

Know what you really want
If I were to ask you today what you really want you would brush aside my question and think I’m being vague. OK, let me rephrase that, what is your life purpose? It has nothing to do with what is expected of you or what you feel obliged to do. It has everything to do with what lights you up inside. People may not understand it, or accept it but it is what you feel, what you know you want and you excel at it too. Some people may refer to it as your calling.

Get to know yourself
We want to get to know our friends, family and we like to meet new people and actually get to know them. It’s exciting, isn’t it? Some people travel for the sole reason of wanting to meet new people. But how much do you know yourself? Sounds funny, right? You’ve known yourself ever since . . . well, since you have been you. Just pause and think . . . How well do you know yourself? What makes you tick? What is it that you would do if money wasn’t a problem, if you had all the time in the world, if there were no conditions standing in your way? Your response to these questions should start to give you clues on what makes you tick.

What are you really good at?
Some hints may come from your capabilities. It’s a given that in this life we all have acquired a lot of skills to do different things, especially now that we want to do everything by ourselves, or we wish to.

There is that “skill” that comes naturally, one you didn’t particularly have to sweat to learn, one that you find yourself doing without expecting remuneration for, one that you probably label as your hobby and you just love it. That may be a pointer to your life’s purpose. Once you have identified it try to imagine doing that for the rest of your life. Does that rest of your life sound like Heaven? If it does, you know you are not lost.

What do you dislike doing?
I know a number of people who studied and achieved a higher status in education but found themselves bored when they eventually found their “dream job”. Some of them would tell you that they don’t like working in an office environment. Isn’t that why they studied for all those years, you ask. Well, sometimes there are just things that you don’t like to do, no matter how good you are at them.

If it’s not “your thing” even if it falls on your lap you won’t find happiness in it. One has to accept that there are certain things that they know they don’t like and that will never change. That would be a sign for them to pursue something else or allow themselves to be redirected to a different path.

The bucket list
If you knew that you were to die soon, would you be happy with the way you lived your life? Have you achieved all you wanted to achieve or are you anywhere near that?

What is it that you feel you should have done more of, that which you think if you were to die without doing your life would have been in vain?

Some people are motivated by the thought of death to follow their true calling. What would their epitaph read? What will your eulogies reveal about you? Mbiri yako ndeyei? Udume ngani? At the end will you be proud about everything that you are known for? Is that what gives you peace?

That which you think should be in your bucket list is what you should really give your thoughts to and not only classify it under regrets at the end of it all. Do it while you are still alive. If you can regret not doing it at death then it’s obviously important to you.

What are your health, career and family goals? Are you anywhere near reaching those? If not, have you even started on those? You may ask what these have to do with your life purpose . . . everything. How would you pursue what you are meant to do when you are not in good health, or if your relationships are pulling the other way? Well, I mean the relationships you choose for yourself, like friends, spouse etcetera.

Many people have chosen to blend in when they could have stood out and excelled in what they were meant to do, I don’t believe that life was supposed to be lived on average, but to the Fullest. So, pursue that which your soul longs for, it may just be the thing you’ve been wishing for your whole life.

It may seem tough when one is talking about it, but once you take that first step, when you have decided to do what you really want and you are confident about it along the way you will get directed to the things, people and circumstances that will lead you on your path to fulfillment. Make a decision to follow your destiny today.
