In an interview, Zimbabwe Youth Council provincial chairperson Mr Talent Chivange said youths should demand a stake and contribute to the national economy.
“We should be able to take opportunities as they come. That way we will be counted and contribute immensely to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through the establishment of our own enterprises,” said Mr Chivange.
He said youths in Masvingo should be exemplary in coming up with income generating projects that can also create employment for others.
“Gone are the years when we used to queue for employment. Most companies in Masvingo have been reduced to white elephants, largely due to illegal economic sanctions imposed by the West. We don’t have any reason for waiting to be employed anymore. In actual fact we have to be employers,” he said.
He deplored youths with mentality of being employees in place of creating their own employment.
“We don’t encourage youths in Masvingo, especially our members to habour the mentality of seeking employment when the province is awash of opportunities to venture into business.
“We have youths who have done Engineering, Geology, Applied Chemistry, to name just a few disciplines that can be of value to our quest of being company directors.
“We can manufacture, mine minerals and I am happy that some of our members have benefitted from mining claims from Government,” he said.
Mr Chivange said there were some youths who had benefitted from indigenisation programmes introduced in the province.
“Some of our members have received funding from Government through CBZ bank.
“Some are on the verge of clinching order financing deals in which they will source materials for a number of companies after winning tenders,” he said.
He said there was a need for awareness campaigns as many youths had not appreciated the economic and empowerment drive.
“We seek to educate some of them on the importance of entrepreneurship. We will hold a number of capacity building workshops throughout the province,” he said.
