Secretaries should embrace the virtue of professionalism in their organisations as they play a crucial role in ensuring that the workplace fulfils its mandate by shaping the public’s perception of their organisations.
Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Deputy Minister Abigail Damasane said this at this year’s Secretary’s Day commemorations and Secretary of the Year awards ceremony hosted by Nedle Training Solutions in Harare last week.
“As secretaries there is need for you to demonstrate professionalism as it is an essential part of you since you are the images of your organisations’ bosses and therefore shape the image of the organisation to the outside world,” she said.
Deputy Minister Damasane added that there were seven elements that needed to be embraced by secretaries if they are to make a positive impression and deliver results to their organisations.
“If all of you are to make an impact on your organisations you need to possess the following; commitment, belief, positive images, mental readiness, full focus, distraction control and constructive evaluation.
“All these elements combined form a will of excellence which provides a working framework to buy the pursuit of excellence.
Ms Joyce Tembo of the Rural Electrification Agency was crowned Secretary of the Year for 2013 taking over from last year’s winner Ms Sharon Makotore of Dairibord Zimbabwe, while Ms Cleopatra Jani from the Parliament of Zimbabwe was the first runner-up. Ms Susan Mtandamini of the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund was the second runner-up.
The annual awards ceremony has been running for the past four years having started in 2010 were Ms Diana Chideya from the City of Harare was crowned the inaugural Secretary of the Year.
Event organiser Nedle Training Solutions and Corporate Development, was established in February 1995 then known as Nedle Training Services.
To date, the organisation has successfully hosted over 100 public training workshops, the major highlight being the National Secretaries’ Day commemorated every year in September.
The organisation also hosts secretaries’ winter and summer schools annually where participants are drawn from both the public and private sectors.
Nedle also offers specialised training for CEOs, sales executives, managers and administrators and human resource officers.
