Motswana dance sensation Slizer, real name Naledi Kaisara, is expected to headline at Tongai Moyo’s commemorations slated for October 20 in the Harare Gardens. The Tswana songbird will share the stage with sungura ace Alick Macheso and Peter Moyo.
Show promoter Biggie Chinoperekwei said everything was in place for the gig.
“Slizer will be one of the artistes that are billed to perform at the commemorations. She has done well in her previous shows in the country and we are pleased to bring her again,” he said.
He said the door was still open for other musicians who want to take part in the commemoration gig.
Slizer composed a song entitled “Nyika YeZimbabwe” showing her lover for the country.
The eight-minute song gives a chronology of tourist sites in Zimbabwe from the Zambezi to the Limpopo, including its impressive flora and fauna as well as the people.
Sung in Shona, the song has a contemporary beat fused with kwaito.
She has been in the country several times and has shared the stage with Macheso, dendera exponent Suluman Chimbetu and First Farai among others.
Slizer is famed for her heart-throbbing seductive dances.
Tongai, who died on October 15, 2011 after succumbing to cancer, was a larger than life character during his lifetime.
During his formative years most people dismissed him as a copycat of the late Leonard Dembo. However, the perceptions changed when he released “Samanyemba” album which featured the hit “Murozvi Mukuru”.
He then became one of the most consistent and talented musicians in sungura, churning out chart-topping albums.
When Dhewa was diagnosed with cancer, he continued performing as well as releasing albums despite being in obvious pain.
He even declared that he was not a charity case, when some musicians wanted to stage a benefit concert on his behalf. He later made a U-turn in a dance called “Mandiregera” where he implored fans and colleagues to assist him.
The commemorative gig comes at a time when his heir, the “Young Igwe”, is on a roll following the release in July of his debut album “Mushonga Mukuru”.
