ZIFA yesterday gave a special and befitting send-off for the national Under-20 and Under-17 women’s squads who will be representing the nation in World Cup and COSAFA football assignments.
The Under-17 Girls are set to play at the COSAFA Championships in Windhoek, Namibia, on Saturday in what becomes the first of a proposed five women’s tournaments on the COSAFA calendar for 2025.
The development of women’s football in the COSAFA region in the last decade has been impressive, with opportunities on and off the pitch coming as part of the beautiful game. On their part, coach Garthly Chipuka’s Under-20 side will be travelling to play Rwanda in back-to-back World Cup qualifiers in Kigali.
Both teams are scheduled to depart today.
The ceremony, which took place in the capital yesterday, was attended by ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi, his deputy Loveness Mukura and some senior ZIFA officials, including members of the marketing committee.
Magwizi applauded the young players for their dedication to flying Zimbabwe’s flag.
“Everyone is marvelling right now at how we have made this possible because they think Zimbabwean football has died,” Magwizi said.
“We are here to say, young ladies, rise up, take your stand and represent the nation.
“Many will be surprised when they see you doing wonders in Rwanda and Namibia, so this is our time to rise up again.”
The Young Mighty Warriors’ participation signifies a key moment in the bid to revive the national game across all facets, beyond just the Warriors and the Mighty Warriors.
Magwizi said the nation is currently focused on reviving the country’s football, particularly the women’s game.
He expressed confidence in the youth teams.
“We gather here not just to bid farewell but to stand together as one football family to celebrate, honour and express our unwavering support for our national heroines,” he said.
“They will be representing the 17 million people in Zimbabwe and this means a lot therefore, we need to celebrate them in a special way.
“We send you with hope, pride and confidence in your abilities to represent the nation with excellence on the regional and international stage.
“I express on behalf of ZIFA our heartfelt appreciation of each of you for your dedication and hard work in preparing for these and other assignments ahead,” Magwizi said.
Lindiwe Ndlovu will take charge of the Under-17 side.
Magwizi’s leadership has, since coming into office in January, pledged full backing for the national teams and underscored their commitment to supporting the women’s teams irls in the best possible manner.
“You are entering the competition with pride in your hearts and the full backing of the nation that believes in you and an association that wants the best for you,” he added.
“We also extend our gratitude for your dedication and passion, which runs deeper than just being footballers.”
He paid tribute to the coaches, whom he said play a crucial role in shaping future leaders by empowering the young players with vital skills.
