Beijing gets heaviest rains in six decades

The biggest precipitation occurred in the suburban district of Fangshan, hitting 460mm. Almost 100 000 people were mobilised for rescue work during the rain that started trashing the city since Saturday morning.

People became volunteers in the rain, providing free rides for those trapped on the street and having people sleep over at their places.

The popular Sina Weibo blogging site was flooded with photos showing the city being swamped. Many complained that the city’s drainage system was ill prepared for rainstorms. — AP.
