Beitbridge Town Council has started installing prepaid water meters across the town as the local authority steps up efforts to improve its bill of collection ratio.
In an interview yesterday the town engineer Mr Maxwell Karenyi said they would set up a total of 30 pre-paid water meters on a pilot run.
He said they acquired the meters from Elster Kent Metering in South Africa.
Engineer Karenyi said the meters were being set-up at bulky and resistive water consumers.
“We started the installation programme yesterday (Thursday) and we are setting them up at bulky and resistive water consumers.
“These will help consumers to manage their consumption since the meters have built-in leak detectors.
“The whole idea is to improve our bill collection ratio which stands at a combined 45 percent. We are only collecting 23 percent on water consumption.
“We are also urging the consumers to pay up their water bills if the local authority is to remain viable,” Karenyi said.
