Beitbridge-Masvingo crash death toll rises to 26

The death toll from the accident that occurred along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway on 14 February has risen to 26 after another victim succumbed to injuries.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a woman who had been receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Hospital died on February 19.

“This brings the total number of fatalities from the accident to 26,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

“We continue to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to adhere to all traffic regulations to prevent such tragic incidents.”

The accident, which involved a bus and a haulage truck, occurred at the 262-kilometre peg near Lutumba tollgate.

Several passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Meanwhile, the police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying two victims.

“The first unidentified victim is a male adult who was wearing a red t-shirt and black trousers at the time of the accident,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

“The second victim is a female adult who was dressed in a black jersey and black trousers.”

Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to visit the nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk.
