HARARE – South Africa and Zimbabwe will soon meet to plan the implementation of the one-stop border post at Beitbridge, in a move aimed at reducing delays at the port of entry, an envoy said last week.
South African ambassador to Zimbabwe Mpakama Mbete told journalists after meeting Acting President retired General Constantino Chiwenga at his Munhumutapa offices that meetings between the two countries over the one stop border post had been arranged.
In 2009, the two countries agreed on a one stop border post at the busy Beitbridge border to cut massive delays which characterize their link.
“We went into specific issues such as turning the Beitbridge Border post into a one stop border to ensure that trade is of mutual benefit to both countries.
“Meetings are planned already, there is going to be meetings lined up at Beitbridge soon between South Africa and Zimbabwe,” he said.
South Africa and Zimbabwe enjoy good bilateral political, economic and social relations underpinned by strong historical ties dating back many years.
The two countries do not only share strong historical relations but also economic cooperation.
Zimbabwe is one of South Africa’s top five trading partners on the continent, with trade statistics showing annual growth. – New Ziana
