Aleck Mapita (37) of Dulibadzimu, Beitbridge was arraigned before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court facing robbery charges
after he stole R7 000, two Samsung cellphones and a small bag from a couple who were in a car parked in a bushy area along
the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Road.
Mapita was slapped with a US$150 fine or three months imprisonment.
In addition, he was also sentenced to six months in prison, of which three months were suspended.
The court heard that on October 12 at around 4 pm, the complainant was in his motor vehicle parked in a bushy area along
Beitbridge-Bulawayo Road in the company of a female friend when Mapita and his accomplice who is still at large approached
the car.
Mapita smashed the car’s window with a stone and threatened to stab the complainant with a knife if he did not comply with
his orders.
He grabbed the complainant by the neck and his accomplice withdrew a small axe and struck the complainant once on the
forehead.
They robbed him of his R7 000, searched the complainant’s motor vehicle and stole two Samsung cellphones and a small
brown bag.
However, the complainant managed to apprehend Mapita with the help of quarry site workers who were nearby.
They recovered the two cellphones and the brown bag.
