A ZIMBABWEAN delegation that observed the Belarusian elections where President Aleksandr Lukashenko won resoundingly has described the elections as ‘free, fair and peaceful.’
A Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) delegation led by chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba, which is in Belarus to observe the country’s 2025 presidential election, said the polls were above board.
The observation mission is part of a broader effort by international organisations to monitor the election and promote democratic practices.
Justice Chigumba said the Zimbabwe delegation was guided by principles of impartiality and non-interference in the management of electoral processes.
“Our delegation was clear on the distinction between election observation and election monitoring. The legal framework on elections in the Republic of Belarus comprises of the Constitution and various articles of the Constitution and various codes, and we found that the preparation and voting of elections was open to the public.
“Our delegation found that the general political and security environment prior to the presidential election was free, fair and peaceful with limited visibility of security personnel. We took note that there were more than 300 media houses, both local and foreign, and our delegation was clear on the distinction between the election and electoral processes,” she said.
Justice Chigumba said their delegation was clear on the distinction between election and national security personnel.
President Lukashenko secured a seventh five-year term as Belarusian President in a resounding election victory. He won 86,8 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, according to results published by the country’s electoral commission.
The electoral commission said turnout was 85.7 percent in the election, in which 6.9 million people were eligible to vote.
