TWO former Bosso and Warriors stars were given a hero’s welcome in Belgium as top-flight side Cercle Brugge rolled out the green carpet for Honour Gombami and Vusa Nyoni in a touching tribute to their contribution to the club.
The dynamic duo were centre stage at the Jan Breydel Stadium on May 3, as Brugge hosted Kortrijk in a crucial league showdown. Though Brugge slumped to a 2–0 defeat, the night belonged to the Zimbabwean pair who once dazzled the Belgian crowds in green and black.
“It was a great honour being invited to the centre of the pitch and being introduced to the home fans,” said an emotional Honour Gombami, who had a solid three-season stint at Brugge. “It was acknowledgement of our contribution to the club.”
The recognition marks a proud moment for the former Highlanders players, whose journey from the turf of Barbourfields Stadium to the elite European leagues remains legendary.
Gombami, once tipped to go even further in Europe, had his career tragically cut short by injury and officially hung up his boots in 2012 after failing to recover. But Brugge fans haven’t forgotten his silky skills and tireless runs.
Nyoni, his ever-reliable partner on the wing for both club and country, also earned cult status during his time in Belgium.
B-Metro Verdict:
While the scoreboard on the night read defeat, for Zimbabwean football fans, it was a win for legacy. Cercle Brugge’s salute to the Warriors legends is proof that true talent leaves footprints far beyond the final whistle.
