Belgium’s Amadou Onana will miss the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during his country’s last-16 win over co-hosts the United States, the Belgian Football Federation announced on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Aston Villa midfielder was forced off early in Belgium’s 4-1 victory over the US in Seattle on Monday.
“Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. This is devastating news, both for him personally and for the team,” Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene said in a statement.
“We immediately consulted with Amadou and with Aston Villa to agree on the best approach to his recovery. Over the coming days, we will jointly determine the next steps in his medical treatment and rehabilitation.”
However, the statement added that Onana would remain in North America with his teammates until at least the quarterfinals.
Belgium are due to face Spain in the last eight tomorrow in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson did not mention his shock World Cup ending injury as he broke his silence following the post-Mexico win accident.
The England midfielder, whose tournament is over after needing surgery on his wrist, ignored the disappointment as he addressed fans online.
Brentford ace Hendo, 36, seriously hurt himself when vaulting an advertising board at the Azteca stadium.
He was left in a heap on the floor moments after the Three Lions squad had stopped belting out Wonderwall in front of their fans.
And the former Liverpool man needed urgent medical attention before being stretchered from the field with an oxygen mask.
As the team returned to base camp in Kansas City, he stayed in Mexico and was left in hospital. But Hendo acted like none of this happened on Instagram, instead choosing to focus on moving forward.
Speaking out for the first time since Monday morning’s historic victory, he wrote: “A night to remember that’s for sure!
“What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team.
“Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday”. – SuperSport/Sun.
