Ali’s Lebanese lawyer Akram Azoury as saying that Ben Ali decided to sue the state over a footage showing stacks of foreign currency said to be stolen and found in a closet at the presidential palace days after Ben Ali fled the country. Azoury said the decision came after Tunisian former Interior Minister Farhat Rajhi issued last week a statement insisting that the money was borrowed from the country’s central bank to “stage” the footage for “political purpose.
Ben Ali was forced out of Tunisia on January 14, 2011, after nationwide protests against his government, and found asylum in Saudi Arabia along with his family. He has been sentenced in absentia by Tunisian courts to life imprisonment on charges of complicity in the murder of protesters during the riots of 2011 in a number of Tunisian towns. — Xinhua.
