Benhura hints at major exhibitions

Renowned sculptor Dominic Benhura has hinted at major exhibitions in which he is set to participate.

The sculptor, who is celebrating nearly 46 years in the industry, revealed in an interview that sculpting is his lifestyle, emphasising that creativity is essential for remaining relevant and dominant in the field.

“Sculpting is an integral part of my life. It has been my hobby since I was 10 years old when I began working with a chisel, hammer, and stone.

“I enjoy it abundantly, day in and day out. I have been in the industry since 1979,” he said.

Surprisingly, despite his global dominance, the talented sculptor expressed a desire to stage a show locally.

“I would like to do a solo show at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe if the opportunity arises like I used to do years ago.

“My last local show was at Amanzi Restaurant in 2019.”

“I have been very busy year after year. I consistently post updates about my activities on social media.

“I will have a solo show in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I am going to Denmark mid-year.

“I will finish the year with two more shows in the USA, but those details are yet to be confirmed,” he said.

Last year, he attended a solo exhibition of his work in Germany.

Benhura noted that “local is lekker,” as this is where he sources his raw materials.

“I get stones from Guruve, Rushinga, Mutoko, and Chiweshe. I appreciate these stones because they come in different colours and formations depending on their source.”

Regarding his most prized piece for 2024, he said, “I was commissioned to create a Bison and Calf for the City of Carmel in the USA. It has been installed, and we are awaiting the unveiling event.”

Benhura is a contemporary sculptor within the ‘Shona sculpture’ art movement and has exhibited worldwide. His artworks are featured in many public and private collections.

In 2003, Benhura had the privilege of meeting the late Nelson Mandela when one of his sculptures, ‘Swing Me, Mama,’ was installed as part of a display commemorating Mandela in Johannesburg.

He has also explored incorporating other media into his work, using metal, wood, and wire to give his pieces unique qualities.

Benhura has been at the forefront of promoting contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture on the global stage.

His contributions to stone sculpture and global influence have opened doors for other artists.
