As she continues to make waves on the small screen as well as a playwright, actress Danai Gurira was last week awarded the Star Power award during BETas annual Black Girls Rock ceremony.
Fellow winners on the star studded night included Rihanna who walked away with the Rock Star award and Gladys Knight who won the Living Legend gong.
Gurira has become a sensation for playing the sword wielding Michonne in the smash TV series, The Walking Dead.
In addition to her work on the small screen, Gurira has also managed to cement her reputation as a playwright, having managed to rope in Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyongao for her Broadway play Eclipsed last year.
The Zimbabwean actress was also recently tapped to play the mother of slain hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur in his upcoming biopic.
Black Girls Rock is an annual award show, founded by former DJ and model Beverly Bond that honours and promotes women of colour in different fields.
After being presented with the award, Gurira gave an inspirational speech during the show which was broadcast last week on BET and its affiliate channels around the globe.
a?I dedicate this moment to that black girl out there who might not know that she does indeed rock because the world does not always tell us so. I think a lot about black girls and black girls who rock and for me itas about two things.
a?Itas about the women upon whose shoulders I stand who I constantly honour and look to for inspiration and courage. Itas also about those black girls coming up behind me who I constantly encourage and seek to inspire,a? she said.
