HIGHLANDERS Football Club assistant coach Amini Soma Phiri is set to appear at the Bulawayo Magistrates Court on 21 April on charges of criminal insult and undermining police authority.
The charges emanate from an incident that occurred last month in which the Bosso coach was involved in a scuffle over parking space with a top Bulawayo police officer, Chief Superintendent Alberito Andiseni Mashingaidze.
The case number is 887/16.
On the first charge of criminal insult Phiri is alleged to have called Mashingaidze a?a stupid idiota.
It is alleged that on 16 March 2016 at a parking bay along Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and 6th Avenue Phiri unlawfully impaired the dignity of Mashingaidze by calling him a stupid idiot after the pair were involved in an altercation over parking space.
On the day in question Mashingaidze who was driving a government owned Ford Ranger, registration number ZRP 126R, and Phiri who was driving a Ford Bantum got into an argument over parking space drawing attention of the public.
Members of the public who had witnessed the scuffle threatened to assault Mashingaidze in support of the Highlanders coach before constables Jimu Ngwenya and Petronella Ngwenya arrested Phiri.
On the charge of undermining police authority, it is alleged Phiri was rightfully advised of his arrest by the two constables and instructed to drive to the Bulawayo Central Police Station.
Phiri is accused of refusing to comply with police instructions and instead drove his vehicle in the opposite direction before being apprehended by the two constables after he stopped at a traffic light.
It is alleged by defying police orders Phiri intentionally exposed the two constables to danger, ridicule and hostility. .
