A chilled night of drinks and friendship turned into a cold, bitter betrayal after a woman allegedly stole from her pal the moment he passed out. It proves that not even your beer buddy is safe anymore.

Shamaine Lithabo Nxumalo Ngulube (31) of Bulawayo pulled off what might go down as one of the pettiest heists of the year, leaving her friend shocked, phoneless and fleece-less on June 16 at Thokozani Flats in Makokoba. Honest Dube thought he was just enjoying a peaceful night in with a trusted friend. Beers flowed, laughter echoed and all seemed well. That is until Dube dozed off around 10 PM, not knowing the woman beside him was about to show her jezebel streak.

With Dube snoring on the couch, Ngulube crept through the flat, snatched his Huawei P20 phone and a fluffy white fleece, and then vanished like a ghost into the night.

“I trusted her. I never thought she’d rob me like that,” Dube later told police, still in disbelief.

When he woke up to find his phone and fleece missing, he raced to make a police report. Investigations quickly led to Ngulube’s arrest, though only the ten-dollar fleece was recovered.

Ngulube recently appeared in court before Tredgold Magistrate Vimbai Chirayi. Prosecutor Joseph Rugara laid out the shocking betrayal. The case was adjourned and she remains behind bars until 11 July.

The total loot was valued at US$100, but the real loss was trust.

Talk about sleeping with the enemy.
