adminIt’s well-known Beyonce and Jay Z are close friends with the Obamas, so it was no surprise that the pop diva was entertainment of choice for the first lady’s star-studded 50th birthday bash Saturday night.And on Sunday, Queen Bey released a collection of photographs from the White House, including an adorable one of her with first dog, Bo, and another showing her and daughter Blue Ivy admiring the famous Christmas tree.
For Michelle Obama’s epic all-night celebration, Beyonce performed hits including “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and “To the Left” while Stevie Wonder reportedly gave a more impromptu performance with songs like “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”, “I’m Yours” and “Do I Do.”
Pop star John Legend also took to the stage, in front of a host of A-list celebrity attendees, but perhaps the highlight of the night, in some guests’ opinions, was President Barack Obama doing the “Dougie” on the dancefloor.
“Amazing. Incredible party” political analyst Donna Brazile told CNN Sunday morning of the festivities, which took up the entire State Floor of the White House – including the gilded East Room, the formal parlours, and the ornate State Dining Room.
Few details about the festivities were revealed by the White House, which told guests not to bring cellphones with them, and there was a cellphone check-in area for those who did, two guests who didn’t want to be named told the Chicago Tribune. Signs at the party told guests: No cellphones, no social media.
But afterwards, Brazile gushed about the exclusive party.
“Childhood friends there. People from the administration,” she said.
“The most important thing is, Beyonce performed, and I have to tell you, John Legend sang “Happy Birthday,” said the long-time Democratic Party operative who ran Al Gore’s unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2000.
She said President Obama made a loving toast to his wife in front of the adoring crowd, which included their teenage daughters Sasha and Malia.
“The most moving tribute came (from) Barack Obama, who talked about the woman he met and fell in love with,” Brazile said.
The Tribune’s sources said the President was spotted with a martini glass and claimed Michelle had made him a better man.
On the way out, musician Herbie Hancock said the President’s remarks were his highlight of the night.
“It was really beautiful and really touching,” he said, according to CNN’s Political Ticker blog. “He said something – his voice almost cracked like he was crying. It was just beautiful, a husband speaking about his wife.’
Michelle’s mother, Marian Robinson, also turned out to celebrate her daughter’s special day. The DJ reportedly kept partygoers on the dancefloor in the East Room until after 3 am.
The first lady, wearing a flowing red buse and pants, was often dancing to the playlist, which consisted of rhythm and blues and contemporary club music, the sources revealed.
