Beitbridge’s award-winning musician Bhadilah in partnership with the town’s renowned fast foods outlets August Grills has launched a dance competition to keep children off crime and to nurture their talent in the arts sector.
In an interview yesterday, Bhadilah, born Gift Lihlohonolo Ndlovu said they were targeting children in primary and secondary school.
He said the competition was dubbed “August Grills, Bhadilah Music Dance Challenge”.
“The main aim of the competition was is to make sure young children and the youths find something to occupy them so that they stay away from harmful activities like drugs,” he said.In addition, we are looking at identifying talents in Beitbridge youths.
The whole idea is to help them gain confidence in their talents and also convince their parents and guardians that besides school, children can sustain or make a living from talents”.
Bhadilah said as part of the competition, the children send a 30 seconds videos of them dancing to any Bhadilah song.
The videos are sent with the aid of the parents or guardians and are then uploaded on the Facebook platform (Bhadilah Music) for voting.
He said the competition has been running for the past two weeks and that the response from the community was overwhelming.
“Our inaugural winners are Slim Jay, Takunda Chada, and Edna Moyo who are all primary school pupils.
“So far, we do not have any age groups targeted, but we have received entries mostly from primary and secondary school-going children,” said Bhadilah.
He said in the last contest the winners chose meals at August Grills worth R180 for first prize, R90 for the second prize, and R30 for number three.
To avoid overloading disturbing the children’s education, Bhadilah said they would run the competition during holidays.
